About Linney Fencing

We are Linney Fencing Limited. We have been providing quality fencing materials in South London since 1962.

Our Goal has been the same since the beginning; to source quality materials, build durable handmade products and to charge a fair price for all budgets.

It all started in the early 1960’s when Terry Meehan, a qualified carpenter, bought some panels. The product he received was substandard and he left disappointed and out of pocket.

He turned to a good friend of his who worked on a farm, where they made their own panels. Interest aroused, he enquired as to where they could purchase the materials for themselves.

He saved up some money and bought some timber from overseas… Easy!! Perhaps not.

Very quickly Terry learned that consistent quality was difficult to find. He inspected timber from a variety of countries and eventually found that to get good quality timber, you had to search high and low.

Next on the agenda was to build a workshop.

(A lot better then the original workshop)

Next to the River Wandle he fashioned a bench based on the design used at the farm. (The benches are still being used today) Soon to follow was a workshop made out of demolition timber in which he began making fence panels for his private jobs.

The word soon spread and other Fencers were asking if they could buy panels made by Terry and his coworkers. In good weather they put fences up, in bad weather they made Panels for other Fencers.

Business took off and soon they started making big stacks of panels to keep in stock, they even started to supply large companies with fencing panels. Their main focus though, stayed with local fencers and landscapers.

It didn’t take long to realise that panels were just a small part of the business’ future. Soon all sorts of trellis panels and gates were being made to order.

“Whatever someone asked for we used to try and make it, I wanted it to be a place to come when you couldn’t buy the product anywhere else”

This Business was named Riverside Fencing.

Terry started out with no knowledge of how to run a business, but with his training as a carpenter he knew how to make a better product.

Terry learned that there was more to a business than hard work, good decision making and focusing on profit. He learned how important it was to know your local customers as friends, caring about them and the product that you provide to your customer. Forging relationships was and still is a vital aspect of the industry.

“Is there anything I know, or have in this yard, that could help this man”

The name Linney Fencing came from “Mr Henry Cecil Linney” who owned a landscaping business.

A Landscaping job by Linney’s in the mid 1970’s

In 1972 Riverside Fencing and H C Linney & Son (Sutton) Ltd entered into a partnership and years later the name Linney Fencing Limited was created.

In 2002 The partners, including Terry, retired. His two sons Kevin & Paul continued.

Today we focus on Fencing and mainly supply homegrown timber but still import some from Europe. Quality has always been at the heart of our business and will always be.

Since 1962 Linney Fencing has continued to provide quality service and products to local customers, so pop down and see us in the yard! We are happy to help you with any Fencing needs you may have.
